Custom Sheet Metal and Manifold Components for CDU and Cold Plate Assemblies

The liquid cooling supply chain is bifurcating into two layers. The top layer — cold plates, quick connectors and coolant hoses — receives most of the media attention. The bottom layer — sheet metal housings, manifold brackets, mounting rails and EMI shields — is where most of the manufacturing volume actually sits. As liquid cooling moves from niche HPC into mainstream AI data centers, demand for these structural and sheet-metal components is growing faster than the headline components themselves. CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) manufacturers need stamped housings with tight tolerances; cold plate assemblers need machined mounting brackets and protective covers; rack integrators need blanking panels and cable management hardware that matches the thermal and electromagnetic requirements of high-density computing.

WINT's manufacturing footprint — die-casting, stamping, CNC machining and in-house tooling — is positioned to serve this bottom layer with the speed and cost structure that liquid cooling integrators need as they scale from pilot to mass production.

1. CDU Housing and Structural Components

A CDU is essentially a compact chiller: pumps, heat exchangers, filters, sensors and a controller packed into a 19-inch rack-mount or floor-standing enclosure. The enclosure itself is a complex sheet-metal assembly with requirements for leak-tight sealing, vibration isolation and service access. WINT supplies CDU side panels, top covers, base frames and internal mounting brackets in galvanized steel, aluminum and stainless steel. Tolerances are held to ±0.2 mm on critical flange dimensions to ensure gasket compression uniformity. For customers requiring corrosion resistance in coastal or high-humidity environments, we offer 304/316 stainless steel options with passivation finishing.

2. Manifold Brackets and Quick-Connector Mounts

Inside the rack, coolant manifolds distribute supply and return lines to each server node. These manifolds must be supported by brackets that withstand thermal expansion, vibration and accidental impact during maintenance. WINT manufactures manifold support brackets, clamp halves and quick-connector mounting plates from aluminum 6061-T6 (lightweight, corrosion-resistant) or galvanized steel (cost-optimized). Parts are delivered with deburred edges and threaded inserts pre-installed where specified, reducing assembly time at the integrator's line.

3. Cold Plate Covers and Protective Shrouds

Cold plates are precision-machined copper or aluminum components with micro-channel geometries that must be protected during shipping, installation and maintenance. WINT produces cold plate protective covers, shipping brackets and installation alignment jigs from ABS, POM or aluminum depending on the reuse requirement. These are not high-value parts per unit, but they are essential for yield protection — a scratched cold plate channel can cause flow imbalance and hot spots. Supplying these consumable accessories alongside the structural hardware simplifies the integrator's supplier base.

4. Blanking Panels and Airflow Management

Even in fully liquid-cooled racks, some components — power supplies, network interface cards, BMC modules — remain air-cooled. Blanking panels prevent hot exhaust from recirculating into the cold aisle, while EMI spring fingers maintain shielding continuity across the rack frame. WINT supplies blanking panels in 1U, 2U and custom heights with tool-less snap-in or captive-screw mounting. Panels are finished in RAL 9005 black powder coat with optional ventilation patterns for mixed-cooling nodes.

5. Quality System and Documentation

Data center OEMs and liquid cooling integrators require full traceability. WINT's quality system is certified to ISO 9001 and includes incoming material inspection (spectrometer for alloy verification), in-process dimensional checking (CMM sampling), and 100% outgoing inspection for critical dimensions and torque. For custom sheet-metal and CNC parts, we provide material certificates, dimensional reports (CMM or caliper), surface-finish verification and salt-spray test reports on request. This documentation package is essential for integrators who must pass customer audits from server OEMs and hyperscale operators.

6. Lead Times and Scaling

Pilot-phase liquid cooling projects often need 50–200 custom parts in 2–3 weeks. Production-phase projects need 5,000–20,000 parts per month with 4-week rolling forecasts. WINT's tooling shop can produce soft tooling for sheet-metal prototypes in 7 days and hard tooling for volume production in 21 days. CNC programs are validated on first-article inspection before batch release. This dual-track approach — fast prototypes plus scalable production — matches the typical liquid cooling project timeline where engineering changes continue through pilot and early production phases.
